What Can and Cannot Go in a Dumpster

Accepted materials and prohibited items in California

Most everyday debris is accepted without question: lumber, drywall, cabinetry, flooring, furniture, mattresses, roofing, fencing, general household goods and non-hazardous construction waste.

California rules prohibit certain items in roll-off containers. Do not load paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, asbestos-containing material, propane tanks, batteries, tires, fluorescent tubes, medical waste or refrigerant-containing appliances. Placer County and Sacramento County both operate household hazardous waste drop-off programs for these materials at no or low cost to residents.

Electronics fall under California e-waste rules and need dedicated recycling. If you are unsure about a specific item, ask before it goes in the box. A single prohibited item can turn an ordinary disposal fee into a contamination charge at the transfer station.

Questions about how this applies to your specific project? Call (916) 404-2462 — we would rather spend five minutes on the phone than have you book the wrong container.
